Randy bending metal

Randy is attracted to steel because of its strength and permanence.  He has learned to transform the material into objects of beauty and longevity.  His work is characterized by crisp, clean lines and precise forms.  Inspiration from the great Architects who have challenged convention is evident.  Randy's focus is fresh classicism which rejects the trends and will transcend into timelessness.

The surface of the finished work is distinctive and unique.  Immersing the piece into a Black Iron Oxide Patina allows one to view the surface of the metal.  It is not concealed under paint or powder coating.  The result is a tactile softness not usually associated with steel.

All of Randy’s artwork and functional objects are made from industrial grade steel. After selecting the desired profile, the steel is cut to length and bent to shape.  Sheet stock is cut to the desired shapes. These components are tack welded together to form the object. Following adjustments to ensure proper placement, all welds are filled with steel and ground smooth.

The finishing process begins by immersing the piece in a patina solution which reacts with the steel and turns the piece black.  Then a clear protective coating, which is chemically similar to that used to protect your Automobile, is electro statically applied.  These final steps are designed to ensure heirloom quality status to Randy's work.

In 1997, Randall formed R. Henry Design, Inc. a company which he named after his grandfather.
Randy employs one assistance to help him with the creation of his art.
